New park (probably) coming to Allston Way, City needs your input

The City of Berkeley is planning a new neighborhood park on the vacant lot on Allston Way, next to Charlie Dorr Mini-Park and half a block from Strawberry Creek Park. The lot is about 15,000 square feet, a third of an acre. It's big, with room for a bunch of things. I think most people don't know about it yet.

The City is collecting input right now on what should go in it.

Take the survey by Sunday, November 1.

Flyer: New park alert. There's a new park coming! Berkeley is planning a new park on Allston Way, half a block from Strawberry Creek Park. A map shows the lot on the south side of Allston Way, east of Strawberry Creek Park. Ideas from the City's draft plans: open lawn and shade trees, bouldering wall, ball wall, plaza for skates and scooters, picnic tables and grills, community garden. Take the survey, open until Sunday, November 1, with a QR code to the survey.

What's being considered

The City showed three draft concepts on October 21:

  1. Option 1: a loop path around a central lawn and a community garden, with a ball wall, a bouldering wall, a flexible plaza, and a picnic and grill area along the route (plan).
  2. Option 2: a main path connecting to Charlie Dorr Mini-Park, with a picnic and BBQ area, one enclosed dog area, open lawn, and a community garden along the side bordering neighbors.
  3. Option 3: a main path with two enclosed dog areas, picnic areas, fitness equipment, open space, and a community garden at the end of the path.

All three include a community garden.

Who has weighed in so far

An earlier City survey got 180 responses. 44% came from people 55 and over, half had no children, and about 1 in 5 had a kid age 5 or under. If you have young kids and want a say in what goes here, now is the time.
